Thank you for visiting us today. This item is a. 1939 RPM Motor Oil w. Disney’s Mickey Mouse Tin Advertising. This unit measures 24 Diameter. They were used in the following marketing areas…… Where Disney is based…. Where Standard Oil Company of California is based. They were used for a very short period of time. All of these are pretty rare. The Pinnochio is one of the rarest, there are two different Mickey Mouse ones…. And there was a Jiminy Cricket one…. And an earlier Donald Duck one before Disney sent Donald back to the drawing board for a face lift. Standard obtained a license to use the Disney Characters back in late 1938 and used them in several high profile media efforts between 1939 through 1946. This info coming from a Disney Archive person in Burbank. The signs were used on Taxi Cabs for a few years until WWII when all metals used in Advertising stopped due to the metal demand for the war effort. There is a Disney Collector’s book out there where the author claims these were used on 55 gallon drums. Oil is a very dense liquid. Tin would not hold up that pressure. There are some signs out there that had a hole around 6 o clock on them. The same author claimed that hole was for dispensing oil out of. Not possible through such a small hole. Here is what that hole was used for….. Some taxi cabs had the lock to the trunk in a area where the frame for these signs would cover up. So thinking swiftly, they punched a small hole in it so they could access they trunk lock. So simple of an explaination. Donald Duck punching out a snowman is the most popular. And most of these are in great shape. The printing company prepped the raw stock perfectly well. With Mickey Mouse holding the RPM logo…. The printing company failed to cure the metal properly before printing. That is why most of these seem to have a certain amount of light rust spots showing up on the print. Mickey holding the News Paper that says Standard Unsurpassed…. Most of those are in very good shape and may or may not have the Taxi Cab Key hole. Some have the rust problem. SUNOCO’s deal with Disney only saw paper media and cloth banner media levels of advertising. Buyers will be responsible for additional costs. They are available for local pick-up only.
